September 15, 2020
Dear South Charlotte Middle School Families,
I hope you have received the chance to get acclimated to many aspects of South Charlotte Middle School this school year. We did not know that we would start the year in a remote learning environment; however, we are happy to say we have received an overwhelming amount of support from you, our school community. Although it has been challenging at times, thank you for making this transition with us!
This Curriculum Night is designed to continue with our goal of increased school communication. While we would like to host families in-person to learn more about our classes and expectations, we feel certain the virtual experience will provide such opportunities for you to: Meet each teacher
Familiarize yourself with each course
Discover the curriculum resources
Learn the best way to contact the teacher
It’s important to know the names of your student’s teachers. Use the link options at the bottom of this letter to access teacher videos. They are your most valuable resource. We are also including a [link] to a FAQ document designed to help answer some frequently asked questions we would normally try to answer in person. We hope you enjoy this Virtual Curriculum Night experience!

In the classroom:
South Charlotte Middle School strives to foster a well-rounded student by maintaining high academic standards as well as providing numerous elective programs.
Each grade level collaboratively plans and uses vertical curriculum teams to insure that material is challenging and non-repetitive. Instructional grouping meets the needs of varying achievement levels. The focus in all classrooms is differentiation with the goal to have as few students as possible requiring remediation, while we also challenge ourselves to raise the level of our high achievers.
South Charlotte currently offers accelerated and scholars level courses in which students are placed based on their performance on the North Carolina End-of-Grade Tests. Interdisciplinary Units of study are emphasized. Challenging literature is chosen to coincide with the periods of history being discussed in social studies. Teachers plan with the end in mind, and create essays, hands-on projects, lab experiments, research projects, portfolios, and rubrics to keep students actively engaged in learning.
At South Charlotte, we believe that high academic achievement and a safe and orderly environment must occur simultaneously.
In addition to year-long elective options such as Band, Orchestra, and Foreign Language, 7th and 8th Graders at South Charlotte have a 9th Block option for an additional elective which meets every day for 45 minutes.

Digital technology is a strong component of all classes at South Charlotte Middle School. Here, an 8th grade Social Studies class is using Chromebooks to enhance their lesson.
