Smithfield Dolphin Earns "Private" Rank!

Dominell Knox Jr. is a recruit of the Mecklenburg County Young Marines and graduated this weekend earning the rank "Private."

To earn this honor, Dominell participated in a 26-hour orientation program over many weekends.  During this program he learned about history, customs and courtesies, and

military rank structures.  He participated in close order drill and physical fitness. He met his goal of graduating from the program and achieved the HIGHEST physical fitness score in his group.  We are so proud of Dominell for achieving this goal and cannot wait to see what the future holds for this young gentleman!! Leadership. Discipline. Teamwork.

A Smithfield Dolphin Making a Difference!

A few weeks ago, our very own Sophia Schulz, a third grader in Ms. Dalton's class, was riding in the car with her dad around Charlotte.  She noticed a homeless person standing on the side of the road.  Upon seeing this person, Sophia began to ask herself, "What can I do to help?"  She came up with a wonderful idea of giving socks to those in need, since you can put socks on both your feet and your hands.  Sophia, along wither her younger brother and sister, used their own Christmas money to buy socks for the homeless in Charlotte.  Sophia's father mentioned what they were doing to a member of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, wanted to join in to help.  Because of Sophia's idea and hard work, all Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Cars will have a rolled blanket, with socks inside, ready to hand to a person in need.

Sophia has been invited to a media event at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department on Wednesday, January 24th to share her idea and project with others.  We are so very proud of Sophia and the impact she is making in our community!

We just completed the application to become a P21 Exemplar School, which recognizes schools across the country that are preparing students for college, career and citizenship by embedding critical 21st century competencies into the learning environment.
