High School Curriculum Offerings

NWSA Major - Costume Design (audition required)

Apparel and Textile Development I - This course allows students to learn the industry and technical skill basics with a focus on construction and historical innovations along with design elements as they relate to the apparel and textile industry.

Apparel and Textile Development II - Expanding on the 1st level curriculum, advanced industry skills and knowledge along with an entrepreneurial component are explored in this curriculum.

Costume Design (3rd level course) Designed to complement our many arts and performance classes at Northwest, Costume Design provides a solid foundation into research, design and construction production, as well as wardrobe management in this technically driven curriculum.

Students have many opportunities to work theatrical productions as well as create fashion for our annual Spring Fashion Show.  Sustainable fashion, recycled fashion and themed "lines” are also a part of our fashion show.

Advanced Studies - (4th level course) This course is designed to allow the advanced student to enhance their Apparel or Costume Design Major goals.

Introduction to Adobe Applications - This course introduces students to a practice-based, hands-on approach to visual communication design. Students will learn about vector and raster graphics, edit images and print and digital layout.

Adobe Visual Design - This course is a project-based curriculum that develops key digital communication skills such as graphic design, project management, research and communication, photography and illustration.

Digital Design and Animation - This course focuses on the use of the computer as an artistic medium and tool for illustrators.  Students will use vector- and raster-based editing software ranging from character design to animating 3D models.

Marketing - In this course, students develop an understanding of the processes involved from the creation to the consumption of products/services, an understanding and skills in the areas of distribution, marketing-information management, market planning, pricing, product/service management, promotion, and selling. Topics include an understanding of marketing functions applications and impact on business operations and career opportunities within Marketing. English, Mathematics, and Social Studies are reinforced in this course. Appropriate Work-based learning strategies include cooperative education, entrepreneurship, internship, mentorship, school-based enterprise, service learning, and job shadowing. 

Middle School Curriculum Offerings


PLTW-Design and Modeling - (grade 6) Students learn the "process of design" and how to create models of designs using Computer Assisted Design (CAD) software.  Hands-on design activities are incorporated to encourage team building and collaboration skills.

Introduction to Office Productivity - (grade 7) Students learn advanced word processing formatting skills, basic spreadsheet software skills, and presentation software utilizing MS Office while enhancing their computer keyboarding skills.

PLTW-Green Architecture - (grade 8) Students learn how to apply green concepts to the fields of architecture and construction.  They explore dimensions, measuring, and architectural sustainability and apply what they learn to design affordable housing units using Autodesk's® ​3D architectural design software.

Best in Show, "Flower Warrior"


“The Flower Warrior” by Kathryn Bryant of Northwest School of the Arts

The inspiration for this outfit was the strength and discipline needed to reduce and reuse waste, seen in the metal and angular shapes, and the joy and beauty in creatively repurposing materials, represented by the flowers and the fun petticoat.

This outfit consists of:
• 25% newspaper and brown paper, used for the corset top, skirt, and sleeves,
• 25% magazines for flowers,
• 20% aluminum cans seen in the leaf decorations and bracelet,
• 20% plastic grocery bags for the petticoat, and
• 10% cereal boxes and cardboard for the rose cutouts.
• A pair of recycled ballet shoes was repurposed as well.

Did you know that if we recycled all the aluminum cans thrown away in the U.S. for one year, we could save enough energy to power a city the size of Baltimore? And 2.5 million tons of magazines are thrown away every year, which is enough to fill 7 giant football stadiums!

Creatively reusing these materials saves energy, benefits the environment AND creates beauty at the same time.
