Good Afternoon JMR Families-

Welcome to Digital Learning at JMR!  Our team has successfully been working to transition to a virtual learning environment over the last few weeks.  I cannot tell you how impressed I am with the dedication and commitment to our community that I have observed by each of the staff members. The purpose of this email is to provide you with direction and tools to support your child's learning at home until May 15th. Please do not hesitate to reach out to the appropriate staff member for support if you have any questions.  We WILL get through this together!

New Content Start Date - 4/6/2020.  This means that students will need to log into Canvas regularly in order to obtain their work and successfully complete it.

How do students access classes?  Canvas Only

Beginning on April 6th, all students will access course content through the Canvas platform. Teachers that previously used Google Classroom will be posting all of their news content to Canvas so that all learning takes place on one platform for parents and students.  Please do not visit your teacher's Google Classroom as there will not be up-to-date information provided. This will make
it much easier for families to navigate.

In order to access Canvas, please follow these steps

Step 1: go to "cms.instructure.com"

Log in to MyNCEdCloud with your student ID and NCEdCloud password. Please contact your homeroom teacher if you need your NCEdCloud password reset.

Can parents access student work in Canvas classes?

Yes, parents can become an "observer" of student courses by visiting: Canvas.cmslearns.org

Here are directions on becoming an observer of your student's class.

Student Schedule

Students will have the flexibility to work on assignments throughout the week via Canvas.

Live Zoom & Google Hangout Meetings ("Office Hours") will be set up for each course according to content.  Parents may choose to have their child complete one subject per day or engage in all contents per day. That is a parent decision.  Here is a link to the Office Hours schedule and a few sample student schedules that parents may choose to utilize. Parents may also create their own student schedule.  Please be sure to look at the tabs at the bottom of the spreadsheet.

When is my child's school work due?

Due to the unprecedented nature of our current society, JMR wants to provide maximum flexibility to families and students.  All student work will be posted on Monday's for students to complete throughout the week. Based on the schedule you choose to create for your child, they have options regarding when to turn in their completed work.  All work should be completed and turned in, at the latest, by Sunday night of each week. If students want to submit
their work as they complete throughout the week, they are welcome to do that as well. Your teacher will be posting information in Canvas regarding specific course information.  For example, your child's work will be posted on Monday, April 6th and due by Sunday, April 12th.

How will my child be graded?

In recognition that the conditions under which your students will now engage in new learning are unprecedented, JMR remains committed to focusing on engagement more than evaluation.  To that end and in adherence to guidance provided by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, JMR will evaluate
students' progress as follows between April 6th and May 15th.

  • Your child will receive feedback on student learning through informal grades that reflect mastery of standards/content.  Informal grades include classwork items such as warm-ups, quizzes, virtual group work, in-class tasks, class participation, virtual notebook checks, etc.

How much instruction should you expect for a course?

CMS has issued guidance that instruction, at the middle school level, should roughly be around 120 minutes per course per week.  This is a guide that JMR will follow.

Live Instruction via Face-to-Face Digital Platforms

Some teachers may utilize live direction instruction using various platforms. If a teacher chooses to utilize live instruction and a student cannot access it during the specific time, the teacher will post a recorded video of the direct instruction to the Canvas platform.  Zoom, Google Hangout meetings, etc will allow students to have live interactions with their teachers and peers via camera and microphone on their computer. Teachers will post links to either
Zoom or Google Hangout on their Canvas page. Zoom, Google Hangout meetings, etc may be recorded for future viewing so they can be accessed at a later time if students are unable to attend at the scheduled live time. Please keep in mind that these videos will be shared with their classmates and etiquette will be imperative.
Please mute your video if you do not want your image to be shared with classmates.  Not all sessions will be recorded due to certain privacy guidelines we must follow.

Live Instruction: Etiquette

Please be sure to enter a live instruction session "muted" and unmute yourself to talk. Please be reminded that the CMS Code of Conduct remains in place during digital learning.

Hello CMS families,

We hope that you are well and that you are doing everything possible to keep your families safe and healthy. The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted routines for all of us, not the least of which is your child's learning.

To help re-establish some of that routine, your child's school has been provided access to supplementary learning resources. These resources are located on the CMS website (www.cms.k12.nc.us).  There are numerous lessons and activities designed to help you keep your child engaged in learning.  Please note that lessons found on this site will not be graded. This is simply a place where you can find appropriate materials for your child that will supplement their learning while students are out of school.  Print copies of learning resources for students in grades K-3 are also available at the CMS sites providing lunches daily.

In addition to information regarding learning content, the CMS website also has information regarding how to secure and operate your child's device, how to obtain internet access and how to contact support, if needed.  We are working to provide consistent access to mobile devices and internet at home. If you do not have home internet access, we encourage you to contact Spectrum Cable, which is offering 60 days of internet access for free. The number is 844-488-8395. Installation fees will be waived for new student households.  If you are in need of support for your child's device, please contact Danieller.lefebvre@cms.k12.nc.us

Good Morning Chargers!

This is Mike Miliote with an important update for the week ahead. I wanted to first thank you for your patience as we work in a unified fashion with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools to navigate this unknown territory. We have been following their lead to ensure that we are completely aligned to the plan as a district.

With that being said, teachers will be working on inputting student grades in Powerschool. Virtual Learning will begin for students on Monday, March 23rd which will cover only supplemental work to enhance previously taught material through March 27th. In the meantime, parents are encouraged to enjoy spending quality time as a family and have their child put their devices down.

Teachers will be communicating with your child directly with more details in the days to come. Please be sure to have your child check their teacher's Google Classroom or Canvas course on Monday for updates.

I know these circumstances can be difficult and we recognize all the feelings that you and your children may be experiencing. Our hope is that we will be able to provide comfort and consistency in the days ahead for our students and our families. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to us but know that we are working each day this week to understand what is to come next. We may not have all the answers you are looking for at this time. We will all be working together to make sure that virtual learning begins on Monday without any delays.

I thank you in advance for your patience, cooperation as well as understanding throughout this process.

Please be sure to take time to enjoy families the next few days and disconnect from devices until Monday.

Q3 & Online Learning

The Quarter 3 grading period will close on Thursday, March 19 at 8 AM. All missing assignments should be turned in electronically via email to the assigned teacher by the Thursday deadline. Check Google Classroom and/or Canvas for directions or instructions about missing assignments.

Online learning via Canvas and Google Classroom will start on March 23rd. All assignments for the week of March 23 to March 27 will be accessed via Google Classroom or Canvas and be supplemental in nature. This means that during the week of March 23 to March 27 students will solely work on review activities for previously taught topics. No new concepts will be taught the week of March 23 to March 27

Good morning 8th Grade Families --

JMR staff received an update from ETA, our travel agency. ETA received refund information from all third-party vendors except the hotel. Our staff will be able to communicate a final refund amount once the hotel gives ETA a final decision. Keep in mind that a significant portion of the trip fee stems from the hotel. ETA plans on communicating the final amount by the end of the week. JMR staff will communicate with families as soon as possible. Please feel free to direct any questions or concerns to Mrs. Thompson at rebeccak.thompson@cms.k12.nc.us
