Revised Timeline for In-Person Instruction
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education voted at its Dec. 8 meeting to return to remote instruction until Jan. 19 for students in kindergarten through grade 12. Carmel Middle students now begin in-person attendance rotations on January 19th, 2021. Before that time, you will receive bus transportation information in the mail along with a second semester welcome letter.
All students and families should check Powerschool after 12/31 for any Elective class changes that have been made. With the rebalancing of attendance groups and tweaking the master schedule with staff constraints, several students in each grade-level will have their Electives changed. These changes cannot be avoided as we schedule new students into in-person attendance rotations and the Full Remote Academy.
Students Switching In/Out of the Full Remote Academy
For families that submitted a request to switch in or out of the full remote academy for second semester, if it is necessary for your child to have a schedule change that impacts their core-content classes we will email you to confirm the change has been made and direct you to Powerschool to access their new schedule for second semester.
This is only for students who have made a switch in or out of the Full Remote Academy and will largely impact those in sixth grade because of staffing constraints.
Attendance Rotation Notification
CMS will be sending out Connect5 messages on 12/14, 1/5, and 1/15 to notify and remind families of their child's second semester attendance rotation (In-person ABC or FRA). This will also confirm second semester attendance changes that were submitted by those wishing to switch in or out of the Full Remote Academy.
Unless there was an egregious error made, these attendance rotations cannot be changed.
After winter break, students will watch a presentation outlining basic safety procedures that ensure we have a safe reopening of school on January 19th. This includes arrival and dismissal procedures, along with reminders regarding mask usage.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education voted Nov. 10 to revise the timeline for middle school students to return to in-person instruction. The new timeline delays until after winter break the return for all students in grades six through eight in traditional middle schools for in-person instruction.
All families must let the district know if they require morning and/or afternoon bus transportation so that an accurate schedule can be made. The survey must be completed by Nov. 30. Families will need to have their child's student ID number to begin the survey. Click here to begin the survey.
This survey is also on the CMS main webpage, the links will be under the "News & Info" and "Bus Information" tiles.
Materials Pick-Up Day
In light of the recent Board decision to revise the timeline for middle school students to return to in-person instruction, Carmel is hosting another materials pick-up to ensure appropriate instructional items are sent home for the remainder of quarter 2.
Materials that will be distributed:
- Student agendas, if you don't have one yet
- MATH 6 & MATH 7: Unit 4 and 5 workbooks
- MATH 8: Unit 3 and 4 workbooks, if you don't have them yet
- ELA 6 (Optional) Module 3 workbooks, Two Roads, by Joseph Bruchac
- ELA 7: (Strongly encouraged) Module 3 workbooks, One Last Word, by Nikki Grimes
- ELA 8: (Optional) Module 2 workbooks, The Omnivore's Dilemma, by Michael Pollan
November 19th & 20th
Car pool lane
**Current 7th graders, please return the novel from last school year (6th grade) Two Roads, by Joseph Bruchac if you haven't yet.
This is only if you wish to change your current assignment. Please disregard this form if you wish for your child to remain in their current assignment.
Families with students attending in-person for second semester, should also respond to a transportation survey by end of day Monday, November 30.
If you have multiple children attending Carmel, please complete a separate form for each child.
This form is to be completed if you want to switch your child in or out of the Full Remote Academy for second semester. This change would be effective 1/5/2021.
Students for whom the survey is not completed will default to their first semester attendance assignment, and, if attending in-person and eligible for transportation, will be included on a CMS bus route.
With changes to attendance assignments, there is the possibility your child's schedule may change for second semester. This is unavoidable as Carmel has to ensure bus routes, classes, grade-levels and teams meet safety guidelines set forth by the State.
Under the plan, all pre-K students will return first on Oct. 12. Next, groups of K-5 students will return to classrooms on a rotational basis, starting on Nov. 2. Groups of middle school students will return to classrooms on a rotational basis starting on Nov. 23. Groups of high school students will return to classrooms for testing the weeks of Dec. 14 and Dec. 21, and then return to classrooms on a rotational basis for instruction on Jan. 5. Rotations will follow the group A, group B, and group C assignments communicated to families and students in August.

There are numerous constraints on scheduling this year. Schools must account for balancing Group A/B/C/D students in a particular section. Also, some Carmel staff members will be working remotely in Plan B, leading us to navigate how to best implement in-person learning in the event we make a shift to Plan B. Due to these constraints there will be no schedule change requests taken this year. If you feel as though your child's Math placement is incorrect please reach out to your grade-level Administrator.
If your child is still in need of a Chromebook please email Ms. Hibner (email@example.com). You can come to school to pick up or replace a Chromebook!
You can drop-off your broken Chromebook at Carmel. There will be a bin by the Media Center each business day. Please write down the following information on a slip of paper when you turn in your Chromebook: Student Name, Student ID Number, Chromebook Issue Description
Make-Up Drive Thru Open House: Monday, August 17th 2:00pm-4:00pm
All students begin school on August 17th remotely. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education voted to revise its school reopening plan and approved a full-remote learning plan, known as Plan C. With this decision, CMS schools will open Aug. 17 with fully remote learning.
All parents/guardians of a child with a disability will be receiving a letter and call from a Carmel staff member to discuss their child’s IEP/504 plan for the 2020-2021 school year. These calls will take place after August 6th. Parents of EC students, please read the most recent EC communication. To further explain the details of the EC in-person opportunities for service and evaluation as well as to orient you for the coming school year, the EC department will host two parent informational meetings on August 12th. Register here: Registration for Wednesday, August 12th (6:30PM-7:30PM). Registration for Wednesday, August 12th (10:00AM-11:00AM)
If your child has a broken Chromebook you can drop it off at Carmel Middle on Tuesday, August 4th from 10:00am-12:00pm. We will work with the district to repair these devices and get them redistributed as soon as we can. However, we do not have an exact timetable on returning broken devices in the event we run out of replacements.
This is only for Chromebooks that are not functional. Chromebooks with cosmetic damages, missing keys, etc. should not be turned in during this designated time. We will address those needs at a later date. This is only for devices that can't be used at all (black/cracked screen with no visibility, will not turn on even when charged, etc.)
Please write down the following information on a slip of paper when you turn in your Chromebook: Student Name, Student ID Number, Chromebook Issue Description. Any 2019-2020 Carmel 8th grader with a checked-out Chromebook will take their device to high school. Please submit repair requests at your high school.
It is anticipated that the week of August 10th you will receive your back-to-school mailing that contains: a back-to-school letter, your child's schedule, and designated attendance rotation. There will be no schedule change requests taken this year.
The supply list is now posted on the Carmel website. When/if your child comes to school for in-person instruction, please have them bring a filled water bottle and headphones each day.
If you missed Dr. Thompson's Virtual Town Hall you can access this presentation on Carmel's website.
We need your updated contact information! Please complete this form, found under "school announcements" on the school website. We will utilize this contact information when sending out Grade Level Cougar Updates throughout the school year.
We are planning to have our virtual open house accessible on Wednesday, August 12th. This virtual open house will contain a tour through the school building with messages from administration, support staff, and teachers. Typical open house information will be accessed through each staff member's embedded video link.
The "drive thru" component of open house will take place on two separate days. This drive thru will include picking up: information on virtual open house, Math workbooks, ELA workbooks (only if this is a documented accommodation on your child's IEP/504), and assessing tech needs.
6th Grade: Wednesday, August 12th - 8:30am-10:30am & 4:30pm-6:30pm. Rising-6th graders who did not check out a Chromebook from their elementary school will pick up their new Chromebook at this time (we will do our best with the inventory that we have currently)
