Second Semester Welcome Letter

3/24/2021

This is Dr. Thompson reaching out to provide you with information regarding the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education decision to transition to Plan A for in-person instruction for students in grades 6-12, and next steps for our school.  Last night, the Board voted to provide middle and high school families with the option to transition to Plan A in-person instruction. This means 4 days of in-person (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday) and 1 day of remote instruction (Wednesdays).

Parents should be aware that when we transition to Plan A there will be minimal social distancing while students are in the classroom and on the bus. You may choose the in-person option which is in-person 4 days per week with one remote learning day, or choose to have your student enrolled in the full remote academy with zero in-person learning days. You should only fill out the below Parent Change Request Form if you are wishing to change your child’s current setting.

If you to wish to change your child’s rotation from in-person to remote OR remote to in-person, you were to complete this request by Friday, March 26 at 5:00pm. If you are switching in or out of the Full Remote Academy it is quite possible that your child will have a schedule change for the remainder of the academic year. You can view your child's updated schedule the weekend of April 10 via Powerschool.

A separate form must be completed to request a change for each child in a family.  Be prepared to have your child’s first and last name, student ID number, and grade level. The new attendance plan will begin after Spring Break on Monday, April 12.

Students who currently attend in-person whose families do not complete the Parent Change Request Form will begin attending in-person four days per week starting April 12. Students currently in the Full Remote Academy whose families do not complete the Parent Change Request form will remain in the Full Remote Academy.

3/12/2021

Beginning March 15th, Group A students will come to school on Monday & Tuesday of each week, while Group B students will come to school on Thursday & Friday of each week. Every Wednesday will be a Remote Learning Day. Students will have the majority of their synchronous learning in the morning on Wednesdays, please see the modified bell schedule for this day. We will still follow the same A/B day calendar for social studies, science, and elective classes. Here is a summary presentation regarding this new weekly schedule.

Group C students were informed of their new attendance rotation (A or B) during Homeroom this week and the district will be sending out automated messages to families confirming this attendance rotation change. These attendance rotations cannot be switched or altered.

Although we will have more students on campus, and at a greater frequency, it is important to understand that safety guidelines have not changed. We will still prioritize student and staff safety within all expected safety protocols, including ensuring students are socially distanced. Carmel will not compromise on those expectations. Carmel Administration has evaluated each classroom’s maximum capacity and the number of students in each class now that Group C has been reassigned to Group A or B. There will be no instance where any class size will exceed the number of students that can maintain six feet of social distancing within that space. Additionally, every student group will remain together and be provided a classroom space that can safely accommodate the total number of students within that class.

Picture Day
For those former Group C students, we have established two additional school picture days in April. We will have two additional picture days on April 12th (Group A) and April 16th (Group B).

Materials Pick-up - Full Remote Academy
On Wednesday, March 17th Carmel will be hosting a materials pick-up for students in the Full Remote Academy. Parents should use the normal carpool pattern to receive materials. Pick-up is from 9:15am-3:00pm.

Items to pick-up! Full Remote Academy students only:
MATH 6 Standard and Honors Unit 7 and 8 workbooks
ELA 6 Standard and Honors Workbook and Hidden Figures
MATH 7 Standard and Honors Unit 7 and 8 workbooks
ELA 7 Standard and Honors Workbook and Plastic Vortex
ELA 8 Farewell to Manzanar

3/9/2021

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education voted to revise the current academic calendar and increase the frequency of in-person learning. Students in attendance rotation “C” will be consolidated into Groups A and B for the remainder of the academic year. Students previously assigned to Groups A and B will remain in those attendance rotations.

Beginning March 15th, Group A students will come to school on Monday & Tuesday of each week, while Group B students will come to school on Thursday and Friday of each week. Every Wednesday will be a Remote Learning Day. Wednesdays will not be a totally asynchronous learning day for our students, and we will provide you more information regarding these Remote Learning Wednesdays soon. We will still follow the same A/B day calendar for social studies, science, and elective classes.

Group C students will be informed of their new attendance rotation (A or B) during Homeroom this week and the district will be sending out automated messages to families confirming this attendance rotation change.

Our staff and student body at Carmel have done a tremendous job at safely returning to in-person instruction, along with navigating instructional delivery in the hybrid setting. With this change in the academic calendar, we now look forward to seeing our in-person students each week going forward! Our campus has been filled with a renewed sense of joy, camaraderie, and pride with students walking the halls again, and we aim to continue to build on this momentum as we transition into the fourth quarter.

As always, we appreciate our Carmel community’s support and engagement.

- Dr. Thompson

CMS Board of Education Update

The CMS Board of Education approved a recommendation to delay the return to in-person instruction. In support of the Mecklenburg County Health directive, CMS will remain in the current plan, full remote learning. CMS will reevaluate, in partnership with Mecklenburg County Public Health at the February 9th Board of Education meeting. At the February 9th BOE meeting it will be determined if CMS will return to in-person instruction based on district & county evaluation.
Return to In-Person Instruction Update.pdf

If the Board approves the return to in-person instruction at the February 9th Board meeting:
  • February 15 -- PK-5, K-8 schools, EC self-contained and EC students whose IEPs indicate in-person instruction will return to in-person instruction.
  • February 22 -- Middle and High schools return to in-person instruction following ABC attendance rotations.

Revised Timeline for In-Person Instruction
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education voted at its Dec. 8 meeting to return to remote instruction until Jan. 19 for students in kindergarten through grade 12. Carmel Middle students now begin in-person attendance rotations on January 19th, 2021. Before that time, you will receive bus transportation information in the mail along with a second semester welcome letter.

Schedule Changes
All students and families should check Powerschool after 12/31 for any Elective class changes that have been made. With the rebalancing of attendance groups and tweaking the master schedule with staff constraints, several students in each grade-level will have their Electives changed. These changes cannot be avoided as we schedule new students into in-person attendance rotations and the Full Remote Academy.

Students Switching In/Out of the Full Remote Academy
For families that submitted a request to switch in or out of the full remote academy for second semester, if it is necessary for your child to have a schedule change that impacts their core-content classes we will email you to confirm the change has been made and direct you to Powerschool to access their new schedule for second semester.
This is only for students who have made a switch in or out of the Full Remote Academy and will largely impact those in sixth grade because of staffing constraints.

Attendance Rotation Notification
CMS will be sending out Connect5 messages on 12/14, 1/5, and 1/15 to notify and remind families of their child's second semester attendance rotation (In-person ABC or FRA). This will also confirm second semester attendance changes that were submitted by those wishing to switch in or out of the Full Remote Academy.
Unless there was an egregious error made, these attendance rotations cannot be changed.

Student Safety
After winter break, students will watch a presentation outlining basic safety procedures that ensure we have a safe reopening of school on January 19th. This includes arrival and dismissal procedures, along with reminders regarding mask usage.

Revised Timeline for In-Person Instruction

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education voted Nov. 10 to revise the timeline for middle school students to return to in-person instruction. The new timeline delays until after winter break the return for all students in grades six through eight in traditional middle schools for in-person instruction.

Transportation Survey

All families must let the district know if they require morning and/or afternoon bus transportation so that an accurate schedule can be made. The survey must be completed by Nov. 30. Families will need to have their child's student ID number to begin the survey. Click here to begin the survey.

This survey is also on the CMS main webpage, the links will be under the "News & Info" and "Bus Information" tiles.

Materials Pick-Up Day

In light of the recent Board decision to revise the timeline for middle school students to return to in-person instruction, Carmel is hosting another materials pick-up to ensure appropriate instructional items are sent home for the remainder of quarter 2.

Materials that will be distributed:

  • Student agendas, if you don't have one yet
  • MATH 6 & MATH 7: Unit 4 and 5 workbooks
  • MATH 8: Unit 3 and 4 workbooks, if you don't have them yet
  • ELA 6 (Optional) Module 3 workbooks, Two Roads, by Joseph Bruchac
  • ELA 7: (Strongly encouraged) Module 3 workbooks, One Last Word, by Nikki Grimes
  • ELA 8: (Optional) Module 2 workbooks, The Omnivore's Dilemma, by Michael Pollan

November 19th & 20th

9:30am-3:00pm

Car pool lane

**Current 7th graders, please return the novel from last school year (6th grade) Two Roads, by Joseph Bruchac if you haven't yet.

Request to Change In/Out of the Full Remote Academy

This is only if you wish to change your current assignment. Please disregard this form if you wish for your child to remain in their current assignment.

  • Families with students attending in-person for second semester, should also respond to a transportation survey by end of day Monday, November 30.

  • If you have multiple children attending Carmel, please complete a separate form for each child.

  • This form is to be completed if you want to switch your child in or out of the Full Remote Academy for second semester. This change would be effective 1/5/2021.

  • Students for whom the survey is not completed will default to their first semester attendance assignment, and, if attending in-person and eligible for transportation, will be included on a CMS bus route.

  • With changes to attendance assignments, there is the possibility your child's schedule may change for second semester. This is unavoidable as Carmel has to ensure bus routes, classes, grade-levels and teams meet safety guidelines set forth by the State.

Request to Change Attendance Assignment - Second Semester

https://forms.gle/UqpfWi4wK766sMHm7

9/16/2020

Under the plan, all pre-K students will return first on Oct. 12. Next, groups of K-5 students will return to classrooms on a rotational basis, starting on Nov. 2. Groups of middle school students will return to classrooms on a rotational basis starting on Nov. 23. Groups of high school students will return to classrooms for testing the weeks of Dec. 14 and Dec. 21, and then return to classrooms on a rotational basis for instruction on Jan. 5. Rotations will follow the group A, group B, and group C assignments communicated to families and students in August.
