Dear Briarwood Academy families,

Welcome to Briarwood Academy, home of the Panthers. We are a family and community school focused on meeting students where they are to grow them to their highest potential. Our mission statement says, “Through positivity, perseverance and pride, we will ensure: Academic excellence, Briarwood high expectations and celebrate diversity.” We believe in our scholars and work to build a community of engaged learners and make Briarwood the best elementary school in CMS.

We have approximately 780 students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. Our students are diverse, coming from more than 15 countries, and more than half of them speak a language other than English at home. We celebrate a character trait each month, recognizing Principal Pals of the Month.

We also have an extensive offering of after-school activities for our upper grades: cheer squad, basketball team, Girls on the Run, STEP team, Briarwood Young Ladies and Young Men, choir, guitar club, soccer team, Propel Mentoring and 20 Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) Saturdays. We also hold monthly parent-engagement activities such as Literacy Night, Math Night, Mobile Food Pantry, Multi-Cultural Night and more. Each quarter we have special Connect Classes that link what students are learning to real life. Our staff is dedicated and we share a belief that working together is the best way to grow!

At our school, we build each year on a tradition of excellence and academic success, setting higher goals for ourselves and our students. We celebrate our successes in multiple ways: Quarterly Awards for all grade levels recognize students showing the greatest improvement in reading, writing and science. We also have a Positivity Award, Perseverance Award and Pride Award, A honor roll, A-B honor roll, perfect attendance, and Citizens of the Quarters. And we recently started our Briarwood National Honor Society.

I invite you to participate in our school community as often as you can. Please remember to register as a CMS volunteer. All volunteers must register each year and select Briarwood as the site. Please also remember to bring your ID to sign in when you come to school, as we are working diligently to keep our school safe.

Finally, I would like to tell you a little bit about me. I have been in education for 20 years, five of them as a principal. I am a proud graduate of West Liberty University in West Virginia, where I grew up and always knew I would be a teacher. I then went to West Virginia University to study special education. I started out as a special education teacher and have also been an EC teacher, a math teacher, a reading teacher, reading specialist, an Exceptional Children coordinator, a literacy facilitator and an assistant principal.  I then continued my studies at UNCC as principal fellow in school administration. I am also the proud mother of two children. Zach is a senior in college at UNCC. Katie is a special education major at Appalachian State University, following in my footsteps.

As a principal, I am committed to providing the best education possible to each of our students and I believe that every child can succeed in school. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or concerns. I can be reached at 980-343-6475 or via email at betha.marshall@cms.k12.nc.usI look forward to working with you to ensure that Briarwood continues to offer a challenging, effective educational experience in a safe, happy atmosphere. Thank you for choosing Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and for choosing Briarwood.
