Returning to School Parent Letter

Greetings Bobcat families,

I wanted to provide you with an update on plans for the opening of school, and let you know what to expect in the coming weeks.  On Wednesday night, the CMS Board of Education approved its plan for reopening schools on Aug. 17. The plan, known as Plan B-Plus Remote, begins the school year with students attending school in person for a few days based on a rotation schedule. Beginning in week three, all instruction will be remote.

The plan is designed to address worsening COVID-19 conditions and was an option given to districts by Governor Cooper in a statewide announcement on Tuesday.  The CMS Board indicated that metrics will be used to make decisions about how long Plan B-Plus Remote will continue.  When conditions improve, we anticipate that we will be able to move to the full Plan-B rotation of in-person and remote learning.

CMS will preassign students to an attendance group (A, B, or C) to ensure that siblings across elementary, middle, and high school attend in-person on the same days.  Students will attend in-person onboarding instruction on their group’s assigned days within the first two weeks of the school year.  Families will be notified of their child's attendance group and teacher assignment, along with transportation information in the coming weeks.

In addition, CMS is offering a full remote learning academy for parents who have concerns about sending their students to school during continued pandemic conditions.  Additional information and registration can be found by accessing the link below:

https://www.cms.k12.nc.us/News/Pages/FullRemoteAcademyInfo.aspx

The Remote Learning Academy option will require the commitment of remote learning only for the entire first semester.  School Families who choose this option will continue to have their students enrolled at School and technology, curriculum materials, and instruction will be provided.

I want to assure you that the remote learning plan for this fall is more robust and cohesive than what we were able to offer in the spring.  All CMS schools will be using the Canvas platform for students in grades K-12.  Canvas includes the integration of multiple learning tools, interaction with teachers and peers through video conferencing, and will allow students to be more self-directed during remote learning.  All students will also be provided a CMS device (Chromebook 3rd-12th, iPad K-2).

We will also have a virtual campus tour that is on the website under our rising kindergarten information.  We will look to provide video demonstrations of arrival and dismissal and safety protocols.  We will host a virtual Open House for all grade levels on August 13th from 9-12 pm on a staggered schedule.

I know that there are still many questions about the upcoming school year, and many of you have great ideas to share.  Additional Parent meetings will be scheduled to provide updates.

Thank you for supporting BES!
