The Winterfield Elementary Youth Orchestra program involves second through fifth grade students. Students learn to play the violin, cello and percussion instruments from professional Charlotte Symphony musicians and teaching artists. Inspired by the internationally-acclaimed Venezuelan “El Sistema” model, the program builds community through the collaborative act of music making. The program currently involves 30 students of varying ages and playing abilities. The goal for the 2011-2012 school year is to expand the program to include flutes, trumpets and clarinets, with the ultimate goal of creating a small student orchestra.
