Dr. Atkinson's Visit

State Superintendent Dr. June Atkinson visited Winding Springs Elementary on Oct. 29 to celebrate the school's success in collecting books for the Department of Public Instruction's Give Five-Read Five campaign.

A a part of this annual campaign, parents, business leaders and community members are encouraged to donate five new or gently used books to local elementary schools so that students have books to take home at the end of the school year. Winding Springs' Give Five-Read Five committee set a goal to collect 6,000 books and managed to surpass that goal by collecting a total of 10,549 books which were handed out to students at the end of the last school year.

Teacher and campaign coordinator Connie West said being able to put books into the hands of students will encourage the district's literacy efforts. "I grew up in a low-income family in New Orleans," she said. "They had a bus that would come around to give us books to read and that made such a difference in my life. Now I have the chance to do that for our students."

Atkinson, along with Superintendent Ann Clark, was treated to a performance from the school's award-winning dance team. They also heard music from the city's only elementary drum line. After the assembly, Atkinson toured the school and ended the day by making a special live announcement on the school's TV station. She thanked the students for their efforts on the book campaign and read from her own new book, A T-shirt Named Zee.

"I am so proud of your efforts to collect books and, more importantly, to read," said Atkinson. "It is so important that our students are reading at home and over the summer. And I understand that Winding Springs has a lot of work to do. I heard you have a new goal to raise 20,000 books this year."
