Middle School Information
Waddell Language Academy's middle school has two primary pieces. It is an extension of the elementary language immersion program in Chinese, French, Japanese, German and Spanish (from Collinswood Elementary). It also contains an accelerated foreign language program for students entering the immersion program for the first time in 6th grade.

Foreign Language Program
The Immersion Program. The middle school immersion program transitions students from the total immersion of the elementary grades to advanced levels of academic and foreign language study in high school. Middle school students receive one block of intensive foreign language study every other day, along with an optional foreign language reading course. These immersion students should enter high school language classes at a highly advanced level, with an eye toward accruing college credit for successful completion of these advanced classes. Immersion study is aligned with the NC standard course of study, with the goal of strengthening performance in all academic areas. Students in this program will also have the opportunity to study additional foreign languages.

The Accelerated Language Program. The program offers intensive beginning foreign language study, which is unavailable in other CMS middle schools. The program aims to provide students a strong foundation in language skills, which will allow them to achieve fluency with future study. It also prepares students to enter high school language course in advanced level, which should open the possibility of earning college credit later in high school.

Additional Coursework
Core Courses. All middle school students at Waddell Language Academy will be enrolled in the four core classes, Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, and Science. Additional required courses Health/Physical Education, and an 9th curriculum block which varies according to student needs.

Elective Courses. Students will have a varied array of elective courses from which to choose. Currently students are enrolled in courses including Cultural Arts, Musical Styles, Band, Orchestra, Art, Technology Workshop, Drama, Yearbook, Newspaper and Career Exploration. One of our strengths is the varied interests and talents of our staff, which allows for such a diverse elective selection. Because our elective selections depend so much on our talented staff, they are subject to change from year to year.
