Welcome to the E. E. Waddell Language Academy

Waddell Language Academy (formerly Smith Academy of International Languages) is a K-8 language immersion magnet located in Charlotte, North Carolina. We offer language immersion in Chinese, German, French, and Japanese for grades K through 8. We also offer Beginning Spanish in middle school. To discover more about language immersion and Waddell Language Academy, please explore our website or contact us.

Parents of Prospective Students: We welcome your inquiries, and we love to talk about our school. Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate impromptu visits. If you would like to talk to someone about the school, please call or email to schedule an appointment. Also, we do not give tours to individuals. Our group tours (also called open houses) are scheduled from November to February. To find out more about enrollment in CMS and magnet schools, please visit

Student Assignment Review Process

The Board of Education launched Phase II of its student assignment review process. It will focus on evaluating current home school attendance boundaries and school feeder patterns. Your input is an important part of the process and I personally invite you to attend an engagement session for our feeder pattern, which will be held on February 7 at South Mecklenburg High School located on Park Road from 7-8:30 p.m. or on January 30 at Mallard Creek High for those in the northern part of the county. At the meeting, you will help CMS define the possible criteria to be used to evaluate current boundaries and feeder patterns. It's important to know that no specific maps or boundaries will be discussed at these sessions. The sole goal for these sessions is to get your input on possible criteria. If you are unable to attend the meeting for our feeder pattern, you can attend any of the other scheduled meetings. The list can be found on our school website. Again, I invite you to attend the student assignment meeting for our feeder pattern or for the North feeder pattern. Thank you and I look forward to working with you to inform this important work.
