Show School Information
Greetings, all,

My goodness, November FLEW by!  Our students had a great performance at the Night of Macabre, 8th grade was fantastic at the Southern Christmas Show, and we had a great showing at CMS All-County Honors Orchestra auditions.  MANY thanks to all the parents who have chaperoned, handed out cookie dough, served pizza, and, in general, been there to help out the last few weeks.  You guys make this all possible for these wonderful young people!  Please look below for updates, and remember, not all items apply to every student.

6th Grade
Concert time is approaching!  Students have learned to use the bow and will continue to work on those skills.  Our big debut is at our Winter Concert on Tuesday, Dec. 11!  More specific details will be discussed in class and sent home with students soon.

CMS Honors Orchestra
Congratulations to all students who auditioned!  I am so proud of your hard work.  Every single one of you, regardless of the results, became a BETTER MUSICIAN throughout these last few months.  Students will receive acceptance packets in class today and tomorrow.  There is no cost to participate, but permission forms should be returned as soon as possible.  (When all forms for SW are turned in, we will receive clinic music.)  Please read the packet carefully, especially for key dates!  Students who made the group are:

GATLINBURG!!! (open to 7th and 8th grades)
Second payment is due!  Our overnight trip this year is to Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, Tennessee!  Our trip will take place April 25-April 27, 2019.  Our main purpose for travel is to perform in the Music in the Parks national music competition.  Every time our Orchestra has performed at a national competition, we have earned Superior ratings.  If you sign up for this trip, please note that after school practices will be required to prepare for the competition.  More detailed information is available on the bulletin board in the back of the room.

Charlotte Symphony Concert (for all students who signed up to attend)
Hard copy information is coming home today and tomorrow.  Very excited about this opportunity to hear awesome music with you guys!

Date: Saturday, Dec. 1

Wear: Orchestra polos, black bottoms, SWMS outwear as possible

Bring: your manners, a healthy attention span, and good questions

Depart: Report to bus lot by 5:40PM—we will pull out at promptly 5:45 PM. (Parents who are chaperoning may park in the bus lot.)

Return: Around 9:30PM, but it depends on if they take an intermission or play an encore.  I will have students contact parents on our way home.  If you are not present when the bus is departing, we are not able to stop for you.

Bus etiquette: You may bring listening devices, but you must have headphones.  Keep conversations to your own and adjoining seats. Silent at all railroad crossings.

Your evening:

· We will attend the pre-concert talk at 6:30PM with the Assistant Conductor Mr. Christopher Lees.  It’s a great time to bring any questions you may have about the pieces, but please remember your manners as other community members will be attending also.

· The concert starts at 7:30 PM.  The Planets is about 1 hour long and Deep Field is about 25 minutes long.

· There is some audience participation involved in Deep Field; download the app before we go!

· If there is an intermission, you will be allowed to use the restroom and there are usually light concessions available for purchase, but do not bring food or drinks back into the concert hall.

You need to be on your absolute BEST BEHAVIOR while on this trip.  You are representing your teacher, your orchestra, your school, your parents, your school system.  There will be regular adult humans attending this concert and we do not want to cause anyone not to enjoy the concert.  We want the Charlotte Symphony to invite us back for being so polite and well-behaved.

When I perform, I always try to let you guys know.  If you come to any of my performances, make sure to find me so you get EXTRA CREDIT!  I will be performing with the Carolinas Wind Orchestra at South Point HS in Rock Hill on
Monday, December 3 at 7:30PM.  Free admission!

Sat. Dec. 1 Charlotte Symphony field trip (for those who signed up to go)
Tue. Dec. 11 SWMS Orchestra Concert 7PM (all grades required--report times to come home soon!)

I am so proud of these kids.  Time after time they just show up and do what they need to do, and the results are spectacular.  I am looking forward to our Winter Concert, showcasing the work we have accomplished over the first semester.  Our 8th graders know, and our 7th graders will find out, second semester can be a wild ride with MPA, Fred Ingold, and various other auditions/trips.  I will try to get a rehearsal calendar out as soon as possible.  As always, please let me know if you have any questions.  Thank you for your support of our Orchestra program!
