The Camp Invention program is coming to River Gate Elementary from June 20-23, 2011.  The Camp Invention program is an exciting experience for children entering grades one through six. The Camp Invention program is a week-long summer day program that fosters creativity, teamwork, and science literacy through hands-on fun. Invest in your child’s ability to reason and problem solve through real-world challenges.  June 20-23 will be a fun-filled week of investigations, experiments, and engineering challenges that will blow your mind!

The SPARK Program this year features…

Children walk in the footsteps of Thomas Edison as they create and market a multi-step machine. And, take apart is all new this year, with fun clocks to disassemble! Creative problem solving is fostered as children imagine and assemble the unthinkable. Children work in teams to create multi-step inventions using pieces and parts of an alarm clock and other materials and further explore the processes of invention and entrepreneurship as they market their inventions and receive mock patents.

The Game On: Power Play scores a home run by combining physical activity and creativity. Children practice and build teamwork, coordination, and creative problem-solving skills during fun, energetic games. Like inventions that combine multiple ideas into one product, different parts of a game can be changed to make a brand new game. Classic Camp Invention games are back by popular demand, and children's curiosity will be sparked with a new line-up of wild and wet games. Mix and match, and let the fun roll with games that are sure to enrich and energize!

In this W!LD science safari, participants investigate the cuttlefish and its ability to change colors! Children explore the how fire beetles use infrared light and create a maze for robotic insects. Then children will dive deep as they uncover the mystery of the iron-plated snail. They will remove iron from cereal using neodymium magnets and help the iron sail survive an attack from its arch enemy the cone snail. Children then investigate another insect and explore how the invention of paper was inspired by a wasp, they are challenged to engineer innovative paper structures. Children will also uncover how the nano-sized hairs on a gecko foot can inspire new kinds of adhesives. Finally, children will reflect on the animal kingdom and explore how biomimicry can be used to help create new innovations using animals as inspiration.

In the Curious Cypher Club module, participants must crack codes and stop a mysterious culprit who has been leaving messages at the clubhouse. Children investigate Morse code, Caesar Ciphers, and other perplexing codes and must decide whether or not to let the code-leaving culprit back into the club. Children use math and logical thinking to solve these codes in teams and practice engineering skills to build their clubhouses and solve the mystery!

During the Bounce! An Atomic Journey module, children investigate the science behind bouncy balls! Through a dynamic mix of chemistry and physical science activities, experiments and investigations, children bounce their way through atoms, molecules, mixtures and compounds to figure out how cool matter, like a bouncy ball, is created. Children design high-bouncing investigations, practice moving atoms like nanotechnologists, conduct inquiry-based static electricity experiments and make salty solutions, slimy compounds and fascinating polymers.

During the week, children will be using many recyclable materials in their projects.  If possible, please bring more items to add to our Recycle Room each day.  All children will be using these items, so if there is a special recyclable item that your child wants to use, be sure to mark it with his or her name.  The Camp Invention program is not responsible for lost or stolen goods.  Thank you for enabling our process of invention!  Needed items include:
