For the classes of 2006 and 2007, the college preparatory diploma requires two consecutive years of the same foreign language; the tech. prep. diploma requires one year of a foreign language. For the classes of 2008 and beyond, only the college preparatory diploma will require two years of the same foreign language. No foreign language is required for the regular diploma. More than the minimum study of foreign language is strongly recommended.
We offer five languages: French, German, Latin, Spanish and English as a Second Language (ESL). More than two-thirds of students have traditionally enrolled in at least one foreign language course.
Providence graduates regularly report that they rank extremely high on university placement tests. Often they are exempted from college foreign language requirements altogether. If they elect to continue foreign language study in college, they are usually place in advanced classes, especially students who have completed Levels IV and V.
Our students regularly score well in competitions. They are often the top scorers in North Carolina and are occasionally ranked at the regional and national levels.
