Accelerated Reader Program

Olde Providence is excited to continue the Accelerated Reader (AR) program in 1st and 2nd Grade for the 2012-2013 school year!  This program is used as a motivational tool for students to read more, and we hope it will encourage a lifelong love of reading.

  What is Accelerated Reader?

AR is a computer based program that helps teachers manage and monitor children’s independent reading practice.  Your child picks a book at his/her own level and reads it at his/her own pace.  When finished, your child will have the opportunity during school to take a short quiz on the computer.  AR gives both children and teachers feedback based on the quiz results, which in turn will help your child set goals and direct them towards reading material.

How will OP determine my child’s reading level to get started?

Your child will complete the STAR Reading computerized assessment during class time.

How will I know if a book has an AR quiz?

You may visit the AR BookFinder at to conduct a search of available books with quizzes.  In the OP media center AR books are marked with a dot on the spine.  The inside cover of each book will show the exact reading level and number of points possible when taking a test.

How does my child receive points to reach his/her goal?

Every book that has an AR Reading Quiz is given a point value.  AR points are computed based on the difficulty of the book and the length of the book.  Points are earned depending on how well a child does on the Reading Quiz.  A score of 60% of higher is needed to earn points.  Children are encouraged to read at or above their reading level based on the STAR test.  Quizzes taken on books below that range may not count toward their goals.

How will I know how my child is doing?

By logging on to Renaissance Home Connect you can view your child’s progress toward goals, points earned, and books read.  You will receive your user name and password from your child’s teacher.

Let’s read!  Prizes will be given along the way to encourage your child to continue reading and reach 100% of their goal.
