September 21, 2018 Message:

This is Principal Blue with our reminders for next week.

I was experiencing technical difficulties on Friday so you are receiving this message today.

The district requires all CMS schools to review Title IX every year. Title IX is the federal civil rights law prohibiting harassment of anyone based on sex or bullying of any kind. We will present lessons to our students next week. If you would like to opt out of this activity for your son or daughter, a form will be sent home on Monday, Sept. 24th. Please sign and return the form to your child’s teacher.

September 15th to October 15th is designated as Hispanic Heritage Month. Here at Oakhurst, we take pride in the diversity of our community and support this by celebrating and learning as much as we can about all cultures. Latino authors, inventors, and other contributions from the Hispanic community will be shared during this time. If you would like to share or participate with this month of learning, please reach out to your teacher. All are welcomed!

It's almost that time of year again for the Oakhurst STEAM Academy Fall Festival. It's a tradition that each of our students have come to love. Hosted by the PTA, this is our premier fundraising event filled with tons of games, face painting, balloon animals and more. We need parents like you to assist with running the game booths, helping set up, take things down, and maybe even contacting vendors to make this day a success. The 2018 Fall Festival is being held on Friday, Oct 19th after school. Please email our PTA president at leelah_elaine@hotmail.com if you're free to help with donations or by volunteering. Your continued support is appreciated.

Our fall Book Fair continues on Monday and ends on Friday 9/28. The Curriculum Night is also on the  evening of Sept. 27th. The Book Fair will  be open. Please make plans to join us this Thursday. Our PTA will offer hot dogs, chips, and drink at a reasonable cost and there may also be food trucks to visit before Curriculum Night starts at 5:30 pm. We hope to see you there!

This concludes my updates for this week.

Big Shots Saturdays For students who still need immunizations, the Mecklenburg County Public Health Department will have Big Shots clinics on Sept. 15 at 249 Billingsley Road depending on the weather.   All students must be in compliance with immunizations by September 25th.

Due to predicted bad weather, school will be closed on Monday, May 17th. Please make sure you are safe during this challenging weather!
