Nathaniel Alexander Elementary is a CMS Phase III balanced literacy school through the reading and writing workshop. NAES uses Lucy Calkins and Columbia University Teacher's College as a model with an emphasis on copious student reading at the appropriate individual level, as well as strengthening skills in nonfiction reading and the connection between reading and writing. The school fully implemented balanced literacy in the 2012-2013 school year.
All classrooms K-5 use the balanced literacy framework with a focus on specific alignment to the CCSS within the reading and writing workshop.
The balanced literacy initiative takes a data-driven, individualized approach for planning and teaching. Faculty and staff members receive ongoing professional development on balanced literacy, with a specific focus currently of aligning all balanced literacy teaching to the CCSS and individual student needs.
