Happy New Year! It is hard to believe that it is already 2014! We have been very busy this school year at Nathaniel Alexander Elementary working hard on academic improvement, school community and culture, and partnerships.
We are focused on planning, teaching, and assessment that are aligned to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) while providing necessary interventions and accelerations for students based on individual need. Each teacher has implemented an individual student data tracker aligned to CCSS, Reading3D, MAP, and other district and state assessments. This helps teachers and support staff in guiding and planning effective instruction to best meet individual student needs in all academic areas. Literacy continues to be a large instructional focus for us. We use the Teacher's College balanced literacy framework through the reading and writing workshop model in all classrooms K-5.
We have worked to build a positive school community and culture through a number of initiatives such as monthly Cougar Family meetings, teambuilding exercises, and working to find innovative ways to capitalize on the joy of learning while preparing students to be academically successful. Cougar Family meetings allow all students, parents, and staff to come together to celebrate student academic and disciplinary acheivement. These meetings also include an activity with a meaningful message for students.
Nathaniel Alexander Elementary is working to strengthen and continue to build new partnerships. This has started right here within the other schools of the Governor's Village. In April of 2014, NAES will host the first Governor's Village 5K in honor of former teacher, Martha Nauman. This 5K will take place on the Governor's Village campuses and raise money for Limbs for Life. Nathaniel Alexander has created a powerful partnership with the University City Chick-Fil-A through this event. We continue to build strong partnerships with the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and TIAA-Cref. Partnerships are focusing on raising student achievement and nurturing the whole child. We also have a wonderful partnership with the Vance High School leadership class students. These students come weekly and read and work with our first-grade students. There is some amazing work going on here!
I am looking forward to an exciting, productive 2014 for the NAES family. Go Cougars!
