Happy March! The change in weather has been nice and is a reminder that spring break is not too far away! Spring break will be held the week of April 12-19. The After-School Enrichment Program will be open with camp for students during that week. I am proud of the student growth that we showed as a school in MAP at the midyear. Students are growing in mastery of the Common Core State Standards according to the data in both math and reading. We are gearing up for our final round of MAP testing to be begin on March 17. Please talk with students about the importance of these assessments and giving 100% to do our best. Students are tested on Ipads and computers for the MAP assessment.
We have the upcoming Title I Math Carnival and International Fair. The International Fair is on Thursday, March 27 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. The Math Carnival is on Tuesday, April 22 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. I am looking forward to participating with students and families during this event as we continue to build understanding and mastery of the Common Core State Standards and explore other cultures to build knowledge and community.
We recently held a Cougar Family Meeting and had the pleasure of former NAES teacher, Martha Nauman, speaking to staff, students, and parents about her recent journey with illness and her inspiring recovery. Nathaniel Alexander Elementary is working to strengthen and continue to build new partnerships. This has started right here within the other schools of the Governor's Village. In April of 2014, NAES will host the first Governor's Village 5K in honor of former teacher, Martha Nauman. This 5K will take place on the Governor's Village campuses and raise money for Limbs for Life. Nathaniel Alexander has created a powerful partnership with the University City Chick-Fil-A through this event. We continue to build strong partnerships with the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and TIAA-Cref. Partnerships are focusing on raising student achievement and nurturing the whole child. We also have a wonderful partnership with the Vance High School leadership class students. These students come weekly and read and work with our first-grade students. There is some amazing work going on here!
Please complete the CMS online parent survey. The link is www.k12insight.com/CMS/Parent2014.html. The survey is open March 19-May 2. I look forward to your feedback and working together to make NAES the best place that we can for our students!
