Congratulations to 8th grader Matthew Cosentine, who was the Northeast Learning Community Spelling Bee Champion. Matthew now moves onto the regional Bee in January.

We will have our first home basketball game of the season on Monday, December 10th. The Nutrition and Fitness Club will be sponsoring a Health Fair during the game. Please make sure to visit the fair when you are here for the game.

Tis’ the season for giving. This December multiple JMA organizations are sponsoring projects to help the community. Our Civic Action club is sponsoring a sock drive, our Community Service Committee is holding a book drive, and we’re collecting new toys for Levine Children’s Hospital. Please consider contributing to one or all of these worthy causes! Collection boxes are set up around the school.

Student assignment letters for the 2019-2020 school year were sent home on Wednesday. Parents of 8th graders, please be sure to review your child’s letter for their high school assignment. Families interested in applying to magnet options should visit cmschoice.org for more information. IB Magnet scholars with questions about IB continuation should contact Ms. Kendrick.

Join us for our Scholastic Book Fair this week, December 3rd through 7th. Parents, help is needed throughout the week to run the Fair during the school day. If you are able to volunteer, please sign up using the Sign Up Genius link on the JMA website.

On Monday afternoon, our JMA basketball team will be holding a Blue vs. White scrimmage. Students who wish to stay for the game must submit a parent permission slip to the office no later than 10:30 a.m. Monday morning.

The winter orchestra concert will be held in the North Mecklenburg High School auditorium on Tuesday, December 4th at 7:00 p.m.

On Thursday evening, December 6th, Ms. Kendrick and Ms. Marsh are hosting a High School Information night for our 8th grade parents from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the JMA cafeteria.. They will be speaking about the school options lottery and the high school registration process. Please contact Ms. Marsh or Ms. Kendrick with any questions. If you are unable to attend, the materials from the presentation will be posted on the school's website.

The first round of the 2019-2020 CMS school choice lottery begins today and ends January 7th. Families interested in applying to any magnet option should visit cmschoice.org for more information. If you have a child who is eligible for a magnet seat at JMA because of the CMS sibling guarantee, please make sure to apply for that seat during the 1st round of the lottery. JMA is hosting a High School Options fair for 8th graders on Monday, November 19th from Noon to 1:30 p.m. All 8th graders will have an opportunity to visit the fair and parents are also invited. A separate high school information night will be held in December for parents. Email Ms. Marsh or Ms. Kendrick with any questions.

Since the start of school, JMA’s afternoon busses have been departing the lot at 4:30 p.m., which has delayed many scholars’ arrival home. Beginning Tuesday, November 27th, afternoon busses will be departing the bus lot at 4:23 p.m. Scholars who are not on the bus at that time will need to picked up by a parent. Parents of bus riders, please encourage your scholars to move quickly and safely to their busses at the end of each school day.

The fruit sale money for the band fundraiser is due on Monday, November 19.

Parents with the temperature changing, we are asking that you refrain from dropping your scholar off early unless they are in a club or attending tutoring.  

There will be no school on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday of next week  in recognition of the Thanksgiving Holiday.


November 12th, 2018


First quarter report cards were sent home today. Please review your scholars’ grades and contact teachers with any questions or concerns.

There will be no school on Monday in recognition of Veteran’s Day.

Tuesday’s Cooking Club meeting is canceled.

JMA will host its final home football game of the season on Wednesday versus J.T. Williams. The game will begin at 4:30 p.m. Scholars must submit a parent permission slip to the main office by 10:30 a.m. in order to attend the game.

North Mecklenburg High School is hosting a Magnet Programs Open House on Thursday, November 15th from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. in the North Meck cafeteria.

First, a huge thank you to all of the parents, scholars and staff who helped make Tuesday's Color Run a HUGE success! Scholars had fantastic time at the event and the PTSA has collected over 12,000 dollars to date! And, there is still time to contribute! The donation window has been extended to November 11th. All 6th, 7th and 8th graders will be completing their Fall NC Check-In tests in Math and Reading the week of November 5th. Testing will take place at the beginning of each day. Please make sure your scholars are at school on time each day, well-rested and prepared to do their best.

There are multiple opportunities to cheer on your JMA Blue Devils fall sports teams this week. JMA's volleyball team plays Coulwood on Monday at home, Football travels to Coulwood on Wednesday, and our Cross Country team competes in the City Championship at McAlpine on Saturday, November 10th.  final home football game of the year is on Tuesday versus Bailey Middle School.

Vision screenings will be performed on all 6th grade students during the month of November by our school health staff. If your child wears glasses or contacts, please be sure that they bring them to school as they will need to be tested wearing any prescription eyewear. Parents will be notified if your child's vision results are abnormal and need to be followed up by an eyecare professional. If you have any questions regarding this process, please feel free to contact the school nurse.

This is our main fundraiser for the year. 95% of every dollar raised stays with our school. To begin raising funds, scholars can register for the Color Run at www.TheGetMovinCrew.com. Cash or  check pledges should be returned to the school store in the Color Run envelopes distributed through homerooms. All students who raise at least 5 dollars can participate on Tuesday!

Congratulations to the new members of JMA's Beta Club and National Junior Honor Society. Thank you to all parents and family members who came out to support our scholars at today's induction ceremonies.

Wednesday, October 31st is a teacher workday and there is no school for students.

October 29th through November 2nd is Spirit Week! Monday is Meme Day. Tuesday is Twin Day. Thursday is Tacky Day.  Friday is Pajama Day.

JMA's final home football game of the year is on Tuesday versus Bailey Middle School. Students planning to stay for the game must submit a parent permission form to the main office no later than 10:30 a.m. on the day of the game. JMA will play Bradley on Oct. 29 at Bradley and Bailey on Nov.1 at Bailey.

This is our main fundraiser for the year. 95% of every dollar raised stays with our school. To begin raising funds, scholars can register for the Color Run at www.TheGetMovinCrew.com. Cash or check pledges should be returned to the school store in the Color Run envelopes distributed through homerooms. All students who raise at least 5 dollars can participate on October 30th.


Picture Day is Wednesday, October 24th! Order forms were sent home today, Friday, October 19th. We have a new vendor this year who offers a wide variety of unique picture products, including photo magnets, pendants, and mugs! Please review the selections carefully! Scholars should bring orders and payment on Wednesday. This year you can also pre-order online.

"E2D has partnered with CMS to bring refurbished laptops to CMS students at a steeply discounted rate of $60. This sale will occur at JMA on Saturday, October 27 from 10 AM-noon and will be available on a first come, first served basis. Contact our counselors, Ms. Marsh or Mr. Davis for more information."


Next week our Volleyball team competes at Ridge Road on Monday the 22nd and hosts Ranson on Thursday the 25th!

 

Our 2nd home football game is on Wednesday, October 24th vs. Bradley Middle School. All scholars planning to stay for the game must turn in a parent permission slip on Wednesday morning.

Volleyball and Football both compete this week. Volleyball is home against Bailey on Monday and plays away at Coulwood on Thursday. Football has their first home game of the season on Wednesday vs Ridge Road. Remember that students staying after school for the game must have a signed permission slip. Permission slips are collected during 1st block the day of the game.

 

October is National Bullying Prevention Month. Students are encouraged to wear Orange every Wednesday in October to help Stomp Out Bullying.

Progress reports will be sent home on October 2nd and 3rd. Please be sure to review your scholar’s current grades and contact teachers with any questions.

JMA's curriculum night will be held  this Tuesday, October 2, from 6-8 pm. Grade level core and encore class presentations will be held from 6-7. An IB magnet meeting will follow at 7. We will have Two Chicks and a Truck food truck on site for you to purchase food!

Volleyball and Football both compete this week. Volleyball is away at Ranson on Monday and takes on Bradley at home on Thursday. Our Blue Devils Football team has their first outing away at James Martin on Wednesday.

JMA’s athletic teams will have their first competitions this week. Our Golf team will compete against Whitewater on Monday the 24th. Volleyball and Softball will travel to James Martin on Monday and will play Ridge Road at home on Thursday. The start time is 5:00 p.m.

Please use the JMA website to purchase lockers, spirit wear, dance shirts, orchestra dues, student council fees and cooking club dues.

Curriculum Night will take place on October 2nd beginning at 6 p.m. There will also be a Magnet Parent/Scholar meeting that evening for all scholars in the IB magnet program. That meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m.

JMA will operate on a normal school schedule for staff and scholars on Tuesday, September 18. Wednesday, September 19 will remain a teacher workday as scheduled.

All scholars are required to have a locker and an agenda. To receive a locker, scholars must return their back-to-school paperwork and pay the $2.00 locker fee. Ms. Hopkins is available to receive locker fees during lunch or you pay for a locker online. 

Agendas can be purchased from the PTSA at the school store every morning from 8:45 to 9:15 a.m. The cost is $5.00. Spirit wear is also available for purchase. You may also purchase dance shirts, orchestra dues, student council fees and cooking club dues online.

PTSA will have its first meeting on Tuesday, September 18th at 6:00 p.m. Our School Leadership Team will meet on Thursday, September 20th at 6:00 p.m. in the media center. All interested parents and guardians are invited to attend.

In addition, please visit our school's website if you would like to have your scholar opt out of the K-12 harrassment and bullying lessons.

This is Sonya McInnis, Principal of J.M. Alexander Middle School, with our reminders for the week.


We began issuing lockers today, Friday, September 6th . All scholars must have a locker by September 12th. After that date, no book bags will be allowed in classrooms. To receive a locker, scholars must return their back-to-school paperwork and pay the $2.00 locker fee. Ms. Hopkins is available to receive locker fees every day during lunch.


Agendas are still on sale, but supplies are limited! Agendas can be purchased  from the PTSA at the school store every morning from 8:45 to 9:15 a.m. The cost is $5.00. Spirit wear is also available for purchase.
