Summer Reading Project 2018 

6th-8th Grade 

English/Language Arts 

James Martin Middle School 

Ms. Priscilla Y. Anderson, Middle Grades ELA Teacher  

 

Scholars will explore a journey of reading through various types of literature during the summer months. Based on research, middle school students should be able to read a novel or piece of literature in three weeks. James Martin Middle School Reading Challenge is for all scholars to read at least three (3) books and complete a book analysis. The three books can include novels, graphic novels, poetry, drama, nonfiction and memoirs. 

 

In essence, scholars will build their very own library with various titles to choose. Scholars will receive a formal grade in English/Language Arts upon their return to school in August for the 1st Quarter. All Summer Reading Projects must be turned in by Friday, August 31, 2018.   

     Summer Reading Assignment: 

  1. Scholars are to read three (3) Books 

  1. Scholars must read a fiction, non-fiction and a free choice text 

  1. Scholars must select at least one of their books from their appropriate reading list. 

     Criteria: 

  1. Write a Book Analysis (3-5 pages required- does not include cover page) for each Book 

  1. Book Analysis Must be typed (Include a cover page: book title, author, your name, date, grade and school name 

Book Analysis Components:  

  1. Introduction (Characters/Setting) 

  1. Plot (Conflict w/ Protagonist &Antagonist) 

  1. Theme  

  1. Summary (Evaluate Book – Like/Dislike; Recommend /Not Recommend) 

  1. Create a Glossary for each book : Find 15-25 challenging words in your book (challenging means interesting, difficult, or don’t know or did not recognize) : Write two (2) definitions, sentence for each definition and tell the parts of speech, example- noun, pronoun, etc…
