I’m Larenda Denien, proud Principal of the Top-Performing Eagle Team at Idlewild Elementary! I’m originally from Clarksburg, a beautiful city nestled in the “Mountain State,” West Virginia. I came to Charlotte in the summer of 2003 to begin my teaching career and this city immediately became my home. My passion for teaching and serving others inspired me to become an Elementary School Math Facilitator; I knew this role would allow me to have an impact on the total school by supporting teaching and learning for all of the teachers and students in the building. Two years later, I had the awesome opportunity to serve as an Elementary School Dean of Students so I broadened my scope of leadership by working with all content areas and grade levels. In 2011, I was fortunate to become the Assistant Principal of a school that served students in Pre-K-8th Grade. After 11 years in education, I was named the Principal of this SENSATIONAL school, July 2014, and I couldn’t be happier!
There is such an impressive history at Idlewild Elementary and it thrills me to know I will play a significant role in our school’s future. Students have been receiving education at Idlewild since 1953; however, the original structure is no longer standing, and there have been several renovations and additions to the current structure over the years. One of the many amazing things I’ve realized since becoming principal of Idlewild Elementary is our staff and students are a very diverse group…many of our staff members and families have been a part of the IES family for decades, while some have been here a few years, and others are joining for the first time; we come from many different states and countries; we have unique interests, hobbies, talents, experiences, and backgrounds; and there are a variety of cultures & heritages in which we represent. Although there are several differences that make up who we are as individuals at Idlewild, I know we have some important things in common…we share a passion for education; we value traditions and customs; we respect one another; we embrace individual contributions, personalities, and perspectives; and we are welcoming to all who enter—once you arrive, you quickly become a part of the IES family!
There are more than 1,000 students enrolled at Idlewild Elementary and it’s so exciting to learn about their past experiences, while helping them set their academic & personal goals for the year. As always, my goal is to maintain a championship TEAM of excellent individuals (staff, students, families, & community partners) who are committed to working together to achieve common goals.
Each day, our TEAM will:
· Capitalize on the many talents within our building, homes, & community;
· Put forth our very best effort with enthusiasm & energy;
· Analyze multiple school performance measures with strategic response; and
· Make every moment meaningful for everyone!
TEAM is the focus of everything we do at Idlewild because I know it will take effective communication & true collaboration from each of us to build upon the greatness of our past as we strive to make Idlewild Elementary the best school in NC...together we will SOAR!
I’m honored to be the principal of our AWESOME school as we aim to Empower ALL to be Extraordinary!
Yours in Flight,
