International Festival

International traveler, Sue Helms, a member of Charlotte Sister Cities Committee, asserts that Idlewild's International Week Festival is the "best" International Fair in this area of our country. And she's right! A week in May is set aside each year for each of our 800+ students to become immersed in the studies of other countries. It's a time of Learning and Sharing foreign Cultures, as well as a time when the diverse Cultures of our own Students are affirmed. Cultural Assemblies, Workshops, and Presentations occur Monday through Thursday, and on Friday our entire Campus becomes a Mini-World's Fair. Staff, parents, and students even participate in making presentations at the world fair. Students and families from Idlewild, other public and private schools, home-school groups, and members of the Community visit cultural booths. Participants experience "hands-on" activities such as ---Tapa Tio(Mexican Hat Dance), Egyptian Hieroglyphics, Gyotaku (Japanese Fish Printing), the Wonders of one of Charlotte's seven Sister Cities are featured each year, Spanish Cuisine, Tour de France, Caribbean Rhythmic Moves (Limbo and Tinikling), Storytelling from various countries, Espanol Bingl, Sumu Wrestling, Israeli Follk Dancing, a Taste of Thailand, Ayo (Nigerian Strategy Game), Origami, Greek Traditional Dancing, a Khmer Fashion Show, To--Pe--Di (Shoshoni Indian Counting Game) just to name a few! Student-made cultural products and authentic artifacts are on display. Many community organizations contribute to making our international week a success. They include Nubian Rootz Cultural Center, Resurrection Lutheran Church, The Public Library, International House, SIM - Society of International Ministries, Catawba Cultural Preservation Center, Japan American Society, Highest Praise Dance Ministry, Covenant Day School, Turtle Rock Productions, Portraits of Color, TaeKwonDo Plus, Wycliffe Bible Translators - JAARS, Afro-American Cultural Center, Christ Covenant Church, and The Charlotte Eagles Soccer Team players. In addition, Idlewild's "International Cafeterial" serves a Taste Of the World each day.
