Reading Mentors


Tutor Charlotte

Organize a group of volunteers to adopt a Kindergarten or 1st grade  classroom and read to them once a week for 30 minutes.

Reading Mentors is an evidence-informed intervention developed collaboratively by Read Charlotte and the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library. Volunteers are taught the "ABCs" of Active Reading: Ask questions, Build vocabulary and Connect the text to children's world. The goal is to build language, vocabulary and oral comprehension skills. 

Reading Mentors is organized by Tutor Charlotte, a joint initiative of the United Way of Central Carolinas and Read Charlotte. Training in Active Reading is provided by the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library. Classroom books and support provided by Tutor Charlotte.

*This is an commitment for a group/company that commits to providing volunteers  to adopting a class of 25-30 children

90-minute, 1 time.

Returning volunteers do not need to retake training.

HELPS/ NorthStar Tutors

Help 3rd grade students become fluent readers.

HELPS is a scripted, evidence-based program proven to build students' fluency and comprehension skills.

For the 2018-2019 school year, Read Charlotte is partnering with CMS, Project LIFT, Tutor Charlotte and the Augustine Literacy Project to launch HELPS in selected schools. 

We are targeting students who can sound out words, but need additional help to build speed and accuracy (fluency) while reading.

Tutoring sessions last 10-15 minutes; volunteers can serve 3 students over the course of 45-60 minutes.

Program runs Monday- Friday 12:35-1:20

Commitment: At least 1 semester

3 hour training,
 1 time.

 Continued support on-site.

Augustine Literacy Project Tutors

Help struggling 1st and 2nd grade students develop early reading skills.

The Augustine Literacy Project is an intensive, evidence-informed tutoring model that provides comprehensive reading support to struggling first and second graders. 

ALP provides tutors with over 40 hours of in-depth training on reading, spelling and writing skills using the multi-sensory Orton-Gillingham method. 

Tutors receive ongoing support and commit to providing at least 60 one-on-one tutoring sessions to targeted students.

Build Home Libraries

Schools plan events to increase students' home libraries, 2 times this year. Books must be systematically inventoried and distributed.

Two types of volunteer opportunities: 1) help inventory and organize books for distribution at school-based events; 2) volunteer to help with distribution at school-based events.

Serving K-3rd graders, through Scholastic.

NOT weekly:

1-3 hours, based on the event

Commitment: minimal

0-15 minutes, based on the event

 During this time you can get to know the student, their likes and help them set goals for at school and outside school.

Behind the Scenes
Support the School by coming in at a convenient time for you to assist with tasks like reshelving books in the media center,  cutting out laminated items, sorting and organizing.

Class LeadCommunicate with other parents and guardians in the class to recruit volunteers and supplies based on teacher/student needs.

 When teachers have a need for volunteers in the classroom, field trip, or for specific supplies for the class- teachers will let your you know and you will work with other parents and guardians to sign up to provide what you need. This is not about hosting parties...but rather leveraging the time, talents, and resources of the parents in the class to enhance the learning experience in the classroom.

This person will also be the eyes and ears for the PTA and help the PTA identify volunteers and helpers for our school wide events and projects.
