I am the proud principal of Collinswood Language Academy. It is a pleasure to serve our students and families. My career in CMS began as a high school Spanish teacher and I have worked extensively with English as a Second Language program administration. Supporting high quality language instruction in Spanish and English is my passion. Watching our students communicate fluently in both Spanish and English is truly amazing.
Collinswood Language Academy is the flagship Spanish/English dual language immersion school in the Southeast and was the first school of its kind established in North Carolina. The goal is for all students to be proficient in reading, writing, listening and speaking in Spanish and English. We are a K-8 program and students may continue their intensive study of Spanish language and culture in the magnet program at South Mecklenburg High School.
In Kindergarten instruction is delivered in Spanish for 85% of the day. Special area classes like art and music are delivered in English. In first through eighth grades students spend half of their day receiving Spanish instruction and half in English instruction.
Collinswood is recognized by the Spanish Ministry of Education as an International Spanish Academy. We have several teachers on staff from Spain and every year our 8th grade students look forward to taking a class trip to Spain. Other Spanish speaking countries represented by staff and students include Cuba, Peru, Ecuador, Argentina, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Honduras, Costa Rica, Colombia, and Venezuela.
Collinswood is a national model of excellence in public education. In 2014, Magnet Schools of America recognized Collinswood as one of the top five magnet schools in the country. We were featured in an Education Week article “School Successes Inspire N.C. Push for Dual Language” by Lesli Maxwell. Click here to read the article: 08dual.h34.html
Our students are confident and self-directed. They are leaders who are proud to be Collinswood Jaguars. All students are extremely well behaved and understand and follow the Collinswood rules of etiquette. Students come from all over the southern half of Mecklenburg county. We are racially, ethnically and economically diverse and reflect the changing population of Mecklenburg County. Our students are achieving at very high levels in math, science and reading. Scores on end of year tests consistently exceed those of the district and the state.
I am very proud to be a part of the wonderful Collinswood community!
