BAC Welcomes Principal Range!
Dear Barringer Families,
I am excited to be the new principal of Barringer Academic Center. I have been connected with Barringer for several years and I know the level of excellence expected by staff, students, and parents. As a National Magnet School of Distinction, Barringer has already established a proven record of success. I look forward to working with the entire school community to build on these successes and further Barringer’s status as the premiere elementary school in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.
My first and most important duty as principal of Barringer is to thank Ms. Fellows for her six years of service to our school. She has been an instructional leader as well as being dedicated to the students, staff, and families of Barringer. I certainly have huge shoes to fill and will do my best to carry on her high expectations. Ms. Fellows will be greatly missed and I am honored to have worked with her.
I did want to tell you a little bit about myself. I am a native New Yorker but have lived in Charlotte for the past 15 years. After graduating from Boston College (Go Eagles!!) with a BA in Secondary Education and History, I moved to Charlotte to join my family who moved there two years earlier. My first teaching job was at Olympic High School as a social studies teacher. I loved the school and its community. I was also very fortunate to have met my husband, Chris, also a social studies teacher, at Olympic. Chris is now an Assistant Principal at Vance HS. Clearly, educating students is very important to our family. We have a 6 year old son named Daniel who loves Super Heroes, Ninjago and baseball. After 9 ½ years at Olympic and earning a Master’s in Education (UNCC) with a focus on gifted education, I became the Director of Talent Development and Advanced Studies and earned another Master’s in Educational Leadership (Winthrop University). I held this job for 6 years until I was given this opportunity to serve as principal of Barringer.
In the next week, I will be sharing my entry plan with our school community. This plan will focus on listening and learning about the school from all perspectives. In speaking with staff, students, and parents, I hope to create a better understanding of how I can best serve the school.
Martin Luther King, Jr. once said “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.” I cannot think of a more fitting vision for Barringer Academic Center. I look forward to working with each of you to ensure that every student in our school receive this level of education. When every student leaves our school, they will have the academic skills, leadership, and character that they need to be successful in the 21st Century.
Thank you for the warm welcome that I have received. I look forward to working and getting to know all of you in the near future.
Sincerely,
National Magnet School of Excellence Award Winner
Barringer Academic Center
Barringer Academic Center received recognition from the Magnet Schools of America. Magnet Schools of America (MSA) is a not-for-profit organization that provides national and regional support, advocacy and leadership for all magnet schools and public schools of choice. MSA’s mission is to provide leadership for innovative instructional programs that promote equity, diversity and academic excellence for all students in public school choice programs. MSA established the Magnet Schools of Merit Award to recognize the top magnet schools in the United States such as Barringer. The Magnet Schools of Merit Award recognizes magnet schools that show commitment to high academic standards, curriculum innovation, successful desegregation/diversity efforts and the consistent delivery of quality services to all stakeholders. Two categories of awards have been established by MSA. The top category, awarded to a group of select magnet schools, is the Magnet School of Excellence Award. The second category of awards is the Magnet School of Distinction Award. Schools recognized must be members of Magnet School of America and must submit an application that is scored by a panel of educators. Dr. Jeff Linker, director of CMS magnet programs, is excited about the recognition given to the district and the achievement of the CMS staff and students, such as those at Barringer. “Recognition of these 12 schools as national MSA Magnet Schools of Merit reflects the continuing commitment of CMS to provide high-quality magnet program options for families of our district, which encourage students to achieve to their highest potential,” he said. “It also demonstrates the very serious commitment and dedication our magnet school teachers and administrators have to the goal of CMS Strategic Plan 2014 in Teaching Our Way to the Top.” Last year, CMS had 10 winners. This year, CMS was proud to announce that the number has risen to 12. There are seven 2011 Schools of Excellence winners including "Barringer Academic Center" and there are also five 2011 Schools of Distinction winners. BAC was a "First-time Winner" in 2011!
