National Magnet School of Excellence
Barringer Academic Center
Barringer Academic Center received recognition from the Magnet Schools of America. Magnet Schools of America (MSA) is a not-for-profit organization that provides national and regional support, advocacy and leadership for all magnet schools and public schools of choice.
MSA’s mission is to provide leadership for innovative instructional programs that promote equity, diversity and academic excellence for all students in public school choice programs. MSA established the Magnet Schools of Merit Award to recognize the top magnet schools in the United States such as Barringer. The Magnet Schools of Merit Award recognizes magnet schools that show commitment to high academic standards, curriculum innovation, successful desegregation/diversity efforts and the consistent delivery of quality services to all stakeholders.
Two categories of awards have been established by MSA. The top category, awarded to a group of select magnet schools, is the Magnet School of Excellence Award. The second category of awards is the Magnet School of Distinction Award. Schools recognized must be members of Magnet School of America and must submit an application that is scored by a panel of educators.
Dr. Jeff Linker, director of CMS magnet programs, is excited about the recognition given to the district and the achievement of the CMS staff and students, such as those at Barringer. “Recognition of these 12 schools as national MSA Magnet Schools of Merit reflects the continuing commitment of CMS to provide high-quality magnet program options for families of our district, which encourage students to achieve to their highest potential,” he said. “It also demonstrates the very serious commitment and dedication our magnet school teachers and administrators have to the goal of CMS Strategic Plan 2014 in Teaching Our Way to the Top.”
Last year, CMS had 10 winners. This year, CMS was proud to announce that the number has risen to 12. There are seven 2011 Schools of Excellence winners including "Barringer Academic Center" and there are also five 2011 Schools of Distinction winners. BAC was a "First-time Winner" in 2011!
