The 2013 5th grade class are back from a great trip to our nation's capital. They wish to thank everyone at Barnette who helped support them and make their trip possible. They thank their families and all of the Barnette community who helped in fundraising and attended our events throughout the year!
MARCH MADNESS ABOUNDS AT BES:
Another fun night at Barnette. Friday, March 22nd our families took on our staff and their families for a friendly but fierce battle on the hardwoods. Lots of cheering for both sides made for some great action. Ms. Walker
kicked us off with a breathtaking "National Anthem". Live music provided by Francis Bradley Middle School's preformance band revved us up while awesome dance numbers from our very own Dance Troop from Ms. Staten's Connect21 Block entertained during breaks in the action. Our PTA also provided fun rounds of "Minute to Win it" challenges to get the crowd involved. Preffered seating, raffle drawings (a 50/50 and one for a custom cake made and donated by the Sigler Family) on top of the sale of many yummy concessions donated by our families and communities (thanks Roberto and Ms. Alexander for your barbequing talents) all helped to raise money to support our 5th graders (DC trip and promotion events). Thanks to the many volunteers and donors who made this event possible and so much fun!
Oh yeah ... and THE STAFF WON! 41-34!
THE ANNUAL "RUN TOO OVERCOME" - HELPING TO RAISE FUNDING FOR OUR LOCAL KIDS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS:
What a glorious day! Saturday, March 9th, Barnette participated in an event called "Run TOO Overcome," in Davidson. It is a family-friendly running/walking event designed to raise money for local kids with special needs. Its was a beautiful spring day and a huge success! Event-wide they doubled their number of entrants this year. At Barnette alone, we had 83 of our bears running, including Ms. Hicks and Ms. Brodbeck and Mrs. Newman and Mrs. Orlofsky's husbands - and our very own BUSTER BEAR (made possible by a Barnette alumni, Garret D.). It was definately a family affair. We thank all who participated, contributed and came out to cheer us on. Thanks especially to Mr. Maciag, Ms. Tackett and Mrs. Bavis, our PTA president for volunteering their time and talents in making this happen for our school and EC program.
BES STAFF AND STUDENTS HAIL MARCH TO BE A "PURLELICIOUS MONTH":
- We decked out the office, marched in unison, launched balloons in remembrance and welcomed everyone to join us in wearing purple all the month of March in support of Pancreatic Cancer Research. Staff doned custom tshirts designed by our very own Nicole A.'s (5th Grade) grandmother. Proceeds from the sale of these shirts made it possible for our staff to make a $262.33 donation to the Lustgarten Foundation which specializes in Pancreatic Cancer research and awareness on behalf of all our loved ones who have been victims of this disease.
MUSICAL SEASON CLOSED TO SOLD OUT CROWDS:
Mid March saw the culmination of year long planning and practicing for our Musical Connect21 Block cast and crew. Two performances were held at Hopewell High School Theatre that left crowds wondering - what could they possibly do next year to top this. Thanks to all of our Musical Families who volunteered many hours as well as their talents (Mrs. Adelman transforming plain plywood into captivating scenery) to help make this possible. A special thanks to Mrs. Craddock, Ms. Papp, Mrs. Purtill and Mrs. Anniello for their many, many hours of after school service to our kids.
CULTURAL ART EXPLODED @ BES IN FEBRUARY:
What an amazing success! Thanks so much for the support from our wonderful PTA and all of the many volunteers who made this possible. We are grateful to the many staff, families and community members who came out to show their enthusiam and support for our students and their accomplishments as well. Congratulations to all of our artists and raffle winners!
Last but not least, a big thank you and shout out to the following businesses for their generous raffle donations! All money raised will go to support our CAT team - art, science, project based learning, music, media and gym.
Businesses to applaud: Rural Hill, Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden, Town of Huntersville, Build A Bear, Davidson Community Players, Charlotte Checkers, Charlotte Motor Speedway, Lazy 5 Ranch, Carolina Raptor Center, Birkdale Golf Club, Bruster's, NASCAR Hall of Fame, US National Whitewater Center, Schiele Museum of Natural History, Latta Plantation, Earth Fare, Eez Fusion & Sushi, Children's Theater of Charlotte, Northcross Lanes at the Lake and Meg Art Pottery, Chick Fil A Northcross, Granite Contracting LLC and Omega Learning Center of Lake Norman.
Look what's GROWING ON in PBL (Project Based Learning Labs):

*We have been learning about growth cycles and sustainability by planting our own winter garden. Here, a group of 3rd graders are harvesting while a group of 1st graders got to sample salads made from our bounty. Mrs. Womack even made the students "Kale Chips" - "Yum, can I have some more" was reported widely!
*In 2nd grade, they were working on what role we have in our community as it grows. As an answer to that question, students designed and implemented a variety of projects to help not only our school, but also the world beyond our walls.
To the left is a group of 2nd graders who chose to organized a used Book Drive. With the help of donations from all of our families they were able to collect hundreds of books to help fill classroom libraries. What a great way to reuse and share our resources. Thanks to all who helped and donated.
On the right is another group of 2nd graders who proposed a collection of gift-filled shoeboxes throughout the school. The result – they were proud to deliver 59 boxes to Operation Christmas Child on behalf of Barnette Elementary School. They want to pass on a huge “thank you” to all families who participated.
ANOTHER WONDERFUL FALL BO
OK FAIR COMES TO A CLOSE:
So much fun! So many books! So many families visiting and shopping with us! Thank you Mrs. D'Amico and Mrs. Salzman and all of the many volunteers who made this possible. We will miss seeing you around next week.
BOOSTERTHON DECLARED A SUCCESS!! Please refer to the PTA website link for more details about this fun tradition at Barnette.
We had an awesome day! A huge thank you to all of of the "cool dude" Boosterthon Guys and our amazing volunteers and PTA that made this event possible. We are now faithfully collecting on our pledges.
STAFF GIVE TO AUTISM SPEAKS:
Staff take up a collection and make a donation to honor a co-worker's cause and in support of all families affected by autism.
ANOTHER GRATIFYING AND SUCCESSFUL PINKTOBER!
Our staff once again have banded together to collect $260.47 to donate to the Susan G. Koman Race for the Cure through the proceeds of our "Believe Tees" sales and donations. Thanks to all who participated.
FALL FESTIVAL THANK YOUs!!
Another great community involvement ev
ent for our families! Thanks to all of you who were able to come out and enjoy the festivities. Our amazing PTA once again made this event possible and we really loved seeing all of the staff join in on the fun. Our 5th Grade team want to send out a special thank you to all those who contributed to the success of this year's "Basket Auction". Your donations and efforts into making our baskets fun, overflowing and beautiful was inspiring. Due to your support, we were able to put $2230 into the 5th Grade Fund for their trip to Washington DC and promotion events.
