About Our School

  Welcome to Barnette Bear Country!

  It takes a village

Mural painted by the Adelman Family.   Depicts our philosophy that "it takes a village to raise a child".

Our school is located in the North Learning Community region of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District.  It is a growing residential community in the beautiful countryside in Huntersville, North Carolina.  We presently serve 779 students in Pre-K-5th grade (716 in Kindergarten – 5th grade) and have 76 employees.

Our school is named in honor of B. Alexander Barnette, Sr., a life-long resident of Huntersville.  His land ownership included a parcel that was granted from the King of England before the Revolutionary War.  His lineage can be traced back to the locally historical Alexander and Davidson families.  A Bear is our mascot with the noble characteristics of being strong, brave and independent. Our school colors are blue, red, and white.

Barnette Elementary School uses a model of Continuous Improvement supported by a framework of collaborative learning for students, teachers and families.  Professional Learning Communities at Work, Richard DuFour, will provide the foundation for a student-focused learning community.  Our school culture will embrace a collaborative team environment whose members will work interdependently to achieve learning for all.  We are also a Balanced Literacy school.

Our community and families are active participants as we create and grow our new culture.  All stakeholders have input into the activities and programs that we embrace as we move into our school year.  We have partnered with the Huntersville Parks and Recreation and share extraordinary recreational fields and a state-of-the-art gymnasium.  Our school hours are from 7:45-2:45.

Our school was selected to pilot the Student Success by Design initiative in 2014-2015 and we are continuing this initiative this year. Through this initiative, our school is designed to have an opportunity culture for staff members.  Staff members are able to become a part of the hiring process as well as financial incentives based on student achievement data. Teachers are supported by two Multi-Classroom Leaders (MCL) who facilitate planning, data meetings, student achievement, and provide coaching opportunities.  Each teacher at Barnette specializes in one to two subject areas based on strength areas in grades 1-5. The staff members within each family collaborate in several key areas to include data disaggregation as well as student placement within leveled learning groups.

Barnette was recognized as a Cambridge International School in 2015-2016.  For the 2016-17 school year we are expanding the program to include fourth grade. Twenty-three fifth grader and thirty seven fourth grader students are currently enrolled in the Cambridge program.  Cambridge International prepares students for life, helping them develop an informed curiosity and a lasting passion for learning. Cambridge's international qualifications are recognized by the world's best universities and employers, giving students a wide range of options in their education and career. As a not-for-profit organization, Cambridge devotes their resources to delivering high-quality educational programs that can unlock learners' potential.  Teachers are participating in on-going professional development to be able to implement Cambridge with the fidelity of the high standards of Cambridge.  Cambridge students will leave Barnette and have the opportunity to continue Cambridge at Bradley Middle School, and eventually at Hopewell High School.

This year our school is implementing the Personalized Learning philosophy in math and literacy.  Our staff is participating in professional development throughout the year.  During the first semester our school is focusing on two of the four corner stones of personalized learning: Whole Child and Student Ownership.  We will grow the initiative at a slow steady pace and work to include the other two cornerstones by the end of the year.

The students at Barnette enjoy electives in a traditional schedule.
